The Brooklyn NAACP Education Committee is proud to be working in partnership with The Brooklyn Public Library Macon Branch to celebrate literacy and honor the legacy of a community trailblazer & Macon Librarian, Taneya Gethers-Muhammed. On Saturday September 29, 2018, families are invited to join us at Macon Library for a fun filled day of read alouds with special guest readers, arts based activities, face painting, parent informational sessions and more! There will be free giveaways for children in attendance and tangible take-aways for parents as well.
More about Taneya
Taneya believed that to be a public librarian was to simultaneously be, in her words, a teacher, an artist, a sociologist, a historian, an activist, and even a dancer. She inhabited each of her roles with purpose and spirit, and received recognition as a Mover & Shaker from Library Journal in 2015. We will remember her for Macon’s extremely well-attended Early Literacy Program series, the multi-faceted celebration of the life of Henrietta Lacks, the concert series that traced the history of jazz in Bed-Stuy, and the countless other empowering and inspiring programs Taneya created and delivered for her community.
