Brooklyn NAACP Celebrates Historic Signing of Reparations Commission Bill in New York

Today, Governor Hochul has signed groundbreaking legislation – establishing a commission to study reparations in New York State. This victory goes beyond a legislative success; it represents a significant stride towards acknowledging and addressing the scars of slavery and systemic racism in New York. This legislation is a crucial step forward and signifies New York's readiness to confront these injustices.

As we mark this historic accomplishment, we also affirm that our journey is far from complete. Brooklyn NAACP is resolutely committed to staying actively involved throughout the lifespan of this commission – from its initial meetings and deliberations, to its formulation of recommendations, and most critically, in our continued advocacy for the legislature to act upon the commission’s recommendations. We will ensure that the voices of those impacted are heard and that the commission's recommendations lead to tangible legislative action.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Honorable Charles Barron who began this journey along with N’COBRA, December 12th Movement at the Institute for the Black World when legislation was introduced in 2017 and included a community driven process. We also celebrate the leadership of the sponsors of this current bill along with numerous organizations, advocates and our very own members who picked up the baton and carried it over the finish line. Your relentless pursuit of justice and equity has been the driving force behind this landmark achievement.

This step is significant, but it is just one step. We will continue to unite in purpose and action, striving towards a future where the principles of freedom, justice, and equity are not just ideals, but realities for all.”
